This book explores an unrecognised but mighty taboo our tacit conspiracy to ignore who or what we really are We are therefore in urgent need of a sense of our own existence which is in accord with the physical facts and which over comes our feeling of alienation from the universe Alan Watts asks what is the cause of the illusion that the self is a separate ego housed in a bag of skin and which confronts a universe of physical objects that are alien to it Rather a person s identity their ego binds them to the physical universe creating a relationship with their environment and other people The separation of the self and the physical world leads to the misuse of technology and the attempt to violently subjugate man s natural environment leading to its destruction Explaining man s role in the universe as a uniue expression of the total universe and interdependent on it Alan Watts offers a new understanding of personal identity It reveals the mystery of existence presenting an alternative to the feelings of alienation that is prevalent in Western society and a vision of how we can come to understand the cosmic self that is within every living thing Offering spiritual answers to the problems of a materialistic lifestyle alienated from the natural world Alan Watts is the voice of all who seek a deeper understanding of their own identity and role in the worldThis book explores an unrecognised but mighty taboo our tacit conspiracy to ignore who or what we really are We are therefore in urgent need of a sense of our own existence which is in accord with the physical facts and which over comes our feeling of alienation from the universe Alan Watts asks what is the cause of the illusion that the self is a separate ego housed in a bag of skin and which confronts a universe of physical objects that are alien to it Rather a person s identity their ego binds them to the physical universe creating a relationship with their environment and other people The separation of the self and the physical world leads to the misuse of technology and the attempt to violently subjugate man s natural environment leading to its destruction Explaining man s role in the universe as a uniue expression of the total universe and interdependent on it Alan Watts offers a new understanding of personal identity It reveals the mystery of existence presenting an alternative to the feelings of alienation that is prevalent in Western society and a vision of how we can come to understand the cosmic self that is within every living thing Offering spiritual answers to the problems of a materialistic lifestyle alienated from the natural world Alan Watts is the voice of all who seek a deeper understanding of their own identity and role in the worldThis book explores an unrecognised but mighty taboo our tacit conspiracy to ignore who or what we really are We are therefore in urgent need of a sense of our own existence which is in accord with the physical facts and which over comes our feeling of alienation from the universe Alan Watts asks what is the cause of the illusion that the self is a separate ego housed in a bag of skin and which confronts a universe of physical objects that are alien to it Rather a person s identity their ego binds them to the physical universe creating a relationship with their environment and other people The separation of the self and the physical world leads to the misuse of technology and the attempt to violently subjugate man s natural environment leading to its destruction Explaining man s role in the universe as a uniue expression of the total universe and interdependent on it Alan Watts offers a new understanding of personal identity It reveals the mystery of existence presenting an alternative to the feelings of alienation that is prevalent in Western society and a vision of how we can come to understand the cosmic self that is within every living thing Offering spiritual answers to the problems of a materialistic lifestyle alienated from the natural world Alan Watts is the voice of all who seek a deeper understanding of their own identity and role in the world

This book confirms to me that I am not alone in my view of human life human experiences and deathIt represents a maturity in spiritual thinking written by a genius who has examined spirituality with an intellectual thought process and learned wisdomFor me it speaks the truth and it's a delight to read If you can grasp the message it will bring a new meaning to your life and your selfAs Alan Watts said ' You don't look out there for God something in the sky you look in you '

This book opened my mind and showed me a new way of looking at the world It's beautifully written Alan Watts sure knew how to turn a phrase Elegant language and complex thought with no academic jargon sight Although it's not always easy reading This book deals with the meaning and substance of life so the ideas may reuire a bit of time to digest But Alan Watts talks to the reader like a friend and like an adult The ideas are presented with humour grace and artistry It was written in the 1960's and has a 60's counterculture flavour A few small sections are a bit dated But that just makes it fun and interesting If you're interested in philosophy spiritually self reflection self improvement; if you've ever though about your place in the world read this book

I first bought this book in 1978 after coming across it on a bookstand when I was really strung out and wondering what it was all aboutIt's a uick book to read took me a day and it did change my lifeIt doesn't solve problems or even give solutions but just an expanded way of looking at the world and also the knowledge that some other people feel exactly the same as you You are not aloneI bought this copy to give to my daughter and my sonThe only thing I would say is that it does reuire a certain amount of education in order to properly understand what he is talking about
